The Art of Raden
Around the 7th century, Chinese artisans made a remarkable discovery: cut nacre — mother-of-pearl — into thin pieces, inlay them into wood or lacquer, and you could trap the ocean's light inside an object forever. They called this art Raden (螺钿), and for over 1,300 years it was reserved for emperors, palaces, and the finest collections in the world.
The craft was passed down through generations, surviving wars, dynasties, and industrial revolutions. Today, the tradition continues in family workshops where artisans learn from their parents, who learned from theirs — a living chain of craft spanning thirteen centuries. The same hands. The Process: Why Machines Can't Do This
A single Raden piece involves more than twenty separate steps. Some take minutes. Others take days. There are no shortcuts.
Selected by Hand
Artisans examine hundreds of shells, selecting only the finest 5% — those with the perfect balance of thickness, color, and iridescence.
Cut and Shaped by Hand
Each fragment is cut, shaped, and placed individually. A single tray can contain thousands of pieces. Each cut is irreversible.
Polished to Life
Multiple rounds of hand-polishing reveal the shell's natural luster. Light enters the nacre and bounces between its layers — creating that shimmer no photograph can fully capture.
